Riverside Clubhouse

2633 Riverside Blvd
Sacramento CA 95818
916.448.9988

We convened on the Land Park favorite this Thursday to celebrate the birth of the Coworker-who-hates-clowns. She's not an every week regular, but has been coming out, off and on for a couple of years now.

Quite a few of us got there early for their usually nice happy hour, but so did the rest of the neighborhood. We were three deep hanging around the bar, and the bartender was pretty much a dick. Crappy tips for him.

We finally got a small table and ordered more drinks from the waitress, great improvement. Chowed down on some really delicious calamari and waited for 7pm to roll around.

We had a nice large table kind of in the middle of the restaurant. Our waitress was nice, but kind of sucked at her job. It was 7.45pm before we finally flagged her down and asked if we could order. Her response, "Well, I didn't want to interrupt your chatting." Lame.

Oddly enough, no one ordered the Garlic Chicken Risotto with the "Sweat Peas". Hmmm, I think they meant Sweet. Well, our resident grammar goddess Jarla fixed that menu right up.

Our food arrived, and I have to say, it is really tasting, and they make fine drinks. If you took away the dick bartender and the kind of lame waitress, the place would be great. As it was, there was a fair amount of bitching between bites.

The gifts and cards were pretty awesome, she got lots of booze and this little gem from NakedBob/Harvey the Lounge Clown...
The Clown Hater's reaction to the gift... She may not like it.

So in conclusion - Early Happy Hour is good. Large party is bad. Food is good. Staff is questionable.

SLO Wine Goddesses - Saucelito Canyon Vineyards

Saucelito Canyon

San Luis Obispo, CA 93401

BONUS BLOG!!!

The Girl Contingent of the Thursday Drunks took a road trip to San Luis Obispo (SLO), to visit the Good Doctors and their wee little Fire Pig. One mini van, six girls and 1 1/2 hours til the wineries close.

Once the two kiddies were left with the unsuspecting dad, we piled into the mini-beast and Caddie did her best to burn out the tires. (Didn't really work to well on the asphalt, but it worked like a charm in the gravel!).

First stop: Tolosa. Very grandiose, a little sterile, not real friendly - oh, and the wines were meh. (aka blah. uninspiring. we had no feelings for it. doesn't deserve a link).

Second stop: Edna Valley. Gorgeous view, better wines, nice staff. Generally okay, but better than the first. It gets a link.

Third stop: Saucelito Canyon. Tiny little tasting room, really nice wines, and fabulous staff!

We are so lucky we stumbled across this place. Really, we had 1o minutes to get to a winery and this one was the closest to Edna Valley. The two women working there were the SLO Wine Goddesses. Fun, real, friendly - people you could go drinking with! They liked our Thursday Drunks drinking model and lamented the fact that they don't have one in SLO. If they ever set one up, we are coming down. And if they are ever up this way, we will so invite them!
They were so rad, they even poured a bunch of corks into a bag for TJ to take home to her cork covered flower bed (as seen in this BBQ at the Bobs post).

Tapa the World, Rick's Dessert Dinner - Sluggy's B-day

In honor of Sluggy's birthday, we had a busy night and a packed house! We started off the evening at Tapas, our usual table in the back by the kitchen. Not so much because they don't trust us with the regular folk, but more because it's the only place they can seat more than 6 people.

The food is really good at Tapas, but the drinks are great! Sangria is delicious, Caipirinha is extra yummy and in huge glass - and there is other stuff, but I didn't pay attention to that (I had a giant Caipirinha talking to me).

We were all over the place on food orders, some tapas, some sandwiches, some paella, some other stuff, but seemed to like it! Our service was the best ever...usually it's a little lacking, but our waitress rocked.

We had a request by a couple of sometimes-drunks to make a key that listed the nicknames of the Drunks with thier real identity...That quickly degraded into us trading nicknames just to confuse people more. Apparently we are all 5-year-olds. (Tag. You're Scribby!).

Sluggy got a myriad of our trademark recycled birthday cards. They just get funnier the more often they are scribbled over, edited and generally maimed.

We walked over to Rick's Dessert Diner for some sweet things, and they didn't disappoint. They have gravity defying cakes - crazy tall. Some ate, some took some home, but all were happy.

Morgan's Bar & Grill

3348 S St
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 453-8745

Morgan's just opened up in the space where Liquid lived. We really liked Liquid and was sad to see it go, but the promise of air conditioning, food and working bathrooms did draw us back.

The over all set up is exactly the same, bar, pool tables and a smattering of tall sit-eat-drink tables. Everything was just much cleaner, cooler, and working. So far, so good.

We were down a NakedBob, Crabby, Sluggy & wee Wednesday, but up one Coworker-That-Hates-Clowns.

There were a nice about of regulars, the bartendress was friendly, although not quite as sassy as before, but still a nice feel. The jukebox was under used, but when it came of it was freaking loud! Quite a shock for one song every ten minutes or so.

The food was yummy! A few of us got there early and orderd jalepenos stuffed with cream cheese and wrapped in bacon. Pretty much wrap anything in bacon and it's delicious, but these were down right awesome! They were actually real, fresh jalepenos, with thick cut bacon - nice and spicy. So much so, that a few people were in the hurt. It's really too bad NakedBob & Captain Crabby Pants weren't here to partake.

Everyone else got grilled turkey & bacon, BLT, and other assorted deep-fried food. Everything was good - especially compared to the hit & miss of Liquid. (we once had mozerella sticks that were so fried, there was no cheese left in them, just bread casing).

The fun for the evening included moustaches, drawn on your finger, then held up. Inspiration came from this French Moustache website and we even got a few pictures from the night on there. I, of course, came right home and humiliated my cat with it.

Journal Tidbit:

"It was a 'sharing-thigh-sweat-with-strangers' day."

Chicago Fire and the Birthday of Captain Crabbypants

614 Sutter St
Folsom, CA 95630
(916) 353-0140

This Thursday we celebrated the birth of one of our own, Captain Crabbypants. The Crab chose Chicago Fire pizza in Folsom for his birthday festivities. We were down two vacationing drunks, RobotGoBen and Scribby (they texted). We had a great table on the outside patio in the thick of the Thursday Night Market and within earshot of a not-terrible cover band. Shooter was able to name every song! Jarla's BF has been interviewing at a local high school for a teaching position. We wish him much luck in pursing this lifetime goal. His new nickname might be "Mr.Chemistry," we haven't settled on it just yet. Anyhoo, the thin crust and the thick crust pizza-pies were delicious as always and the Crab was in effect! Baby Wednesday had a great time watching cars pass, enjoying the nice breeze, chewing on fingers, and being passed around the table. Our favorite Slug baked birthday cupcakes and we showered the Captain with recycled greeting cards and gifts aplenty.

After dinner it was birthday boy’s bedtime so he grabbed his lovely ladies and headed home. A number of us continued on next door to Scarlett’s to listen to the musical stylings of one-man-extravaganza Johnny Lipka and enjoy ladies night. The drinks flowed and we scored a cool table outside that faced a window looking in on the bar. It was like watching reality TV, but more real. From our table we could see Mr. Lipka, the bar, and sloshy ramblings of NakedBob. A fun time was had by all and TJ won a pair of jeans in the Ladies Night drawing.

Two memorable quotes from the evening:

“I like your skirt. The pleats make your calves look nice.”
-Bartendress Danielle to a kilted-NakedBob

“That hagasaurus!? I wouldn’t urinate on her!”
-NakedBob in reference to the cougar at the bar
