Sometime we can be creatures of habit. Last year we went to the Boxing Donkey as a warm up for our Annual Drinky Christmas and we did the same this year! We had a couple of drop in drunks show their faces which is always nice and the Canadian girlfriend of Bumpy as well!

It was pretty quiet and we were half the crowd with about a dozen drunks attending. Took over the corner table and points beyond. Their happy hour goes all the way to 8pm, so it's a nice time to try their apps. The Irish egg rolls are this weird deep fried corned beef & cabbage concoction that is quite tasty! The mac 'n cheese is always a clear winner.

Our server Mallory was great, even convinced her to take a picture with NakedBob. Here is her entry into the journal.

Woot! It's my birthday! We came to Magpie back in August of this year and we loved it. For the basic rundown, read the previous post. Usually we don't visit a place more than once in a year and very rarely within a few months. But what the hell - I got to pick so we came back.

Started off with the grilled artichoke again. That and a glass of $6 Barbera is my happy place! We took over a large section of the restaurant with our 15 people and just sort of table hopped o keep up with folks. Had a couple of first timers that were introduced as, " They're snarky. You'll like them. They drink!" - so true. They were a great addition!

Absolutely everything ordered was freaky tasty! The owner Ed, brought out some apps for us to try including a really delish baked squash & pumpkin dip served with crispy dark pita. Also had some kaffir lime beer that was good, but I can't remember what it was.

I swear they add crack to everything they make because it's all so good. Trout fettuccine, PEI mussels, winter veggie panini, mac 'n cheese with brussel sprouts, blue cheese & bacon, and once again the carrot cake cookie is perfection.

As a treat, Ed brought out some ice cream that he was experimenting with for us to try. Indian spices, saffron & pistachio. It was really interesting, almost cloyingly flavored on first taste (a lot like saffron or rose water ice cream), but it really developed in the second taste and was just irresistible on the third. Everyone finished theirs off.

Once again, Sluggy hit one out of the park with my birthday puppet, glasses and everything! She is a genius.

Can you tell boys like pizza? I can't really argue because their thin crust and stuffed pizza are really delicious. Salads are tasting, nice beer & wine selection and a kick ass artichoke that has been soaked in butter and Parmesan cheese...can't really be bad, right?

Mr. Chem was nice enough to ask for donations to Toys for Tots in lieu of gifts. Hence the wooden train set in the photo below. There was a whole SmartCar trunk full of gifts that were donated! But those Superman undies were all his!

Drink With Your Family Day 2009

We reject the name Thanksgiving and rename it "Drink with your family day"! Mostly because it's always on a Thursday and we should be drinking...but we're stuck with our family.

This year, I assigned the drunks homework. Submit a picture of their meal/drink/whathaveyou. You can tell they were all good students because they promptly starting texting and emailing around noon. Well done. Gold stars for all!

MEAT!! MEAT!! MEAT!!

That's what we were hoping for at Buckhorn and they delivered. But let's step back a bit to start.

We had a full house with all the regulars, a reappearing Sluggy, Dr. Smooth & Bump. One was on semester break, one left the kids at home and the other crash his car to pieces. We're glad they came!

Tis' the season, next week is Drink with your family day, we picked names for our Drinky Christmas secret Santa and all that jazz.

Oh yeah. We ate a lot of prime rib and it was good! Their veggies on the side included pumpkin, squash, bell pepper, onion & zucchini - way better than most bland side veggies. Small but nice selection of beer & wine and a larger selection of foods than you would expect. The walk up and order model helps keep the cost reasonable and the staff are friendly.

Overall, nice place to get a nice meal without a lot of fuss or trouble. Aces. Oh, and spend the rest of your saved money at Ginger Elizabeth Chocolates next door - pure, chocolate bliss.

Grilled Cheese & Beer Night!

This is a good one, go ahead and steal it!

All you have to do is invite people over and have them bring their booze, a cheese or some bread and set up a few George Forman grills or panini makers if you are fancy.

Put everything out on plates. Go! The trick here is that it's not your American cheese/wonder bread sandwich. We had a spread of mustard cheddar, blue, feta, brie, fontina, mimolette and more. Breads were sourdough wheat walnut, multigrain, sourdough, foccacia, rosemary and others. Also a selection of mustards, avocados, onions, salami, tomatoes and pears.

You could spend all night trying the different combinations and that just what we did! We were down some sick folks, but we polished off the food just fine with a healthy dose of beer and wine.

I'm slipping into a food coma again just remembering it.

The outing will never win the swanky award but it will win the super yummy and slightly divey award which is just fine with us! First, how can you not like Mongolian BBQ? Put whatever you like in a bowl and they cook it for you. Girls got multiple fortunes (6 for Jarla, 7 for TheJenny).

Second, how can you not love a little time at a dark, divey bar? The key here is to order simple. Beer or a two ingredient mixed drink and you should be fine and drunk. Anything more fancy and you really are just in the wrong place. The serve is sassy with a side of nice and the karaoke is always going.

Now truth be told, I wasn't there that night - but really, I know how this one goes. Drunks, add your 2 cents and photos to prove you were there...

I was busy getting a cocktail napkin signed for us by Betty White - Golden Girls actress and saucy-mouthed comedian. She rocks!
