Bonn Lair

3651 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 455-7155

Our favorite place to go when we know we'll be a small crowd. Shepard's pie, pasties, fine British ales and cozy seating. Just a night for conversations and catching up.

Hawk's Public House

1525 Alhambra Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 588-4440

John wanted to check out this more casual version of the very lovely and fancy Hawk's out in Granite Bay for his birthday. It was top notch! Really well done and subtle cocktails and all the food was perfectly balanced and delicious. It's a small space but worth the wait to get in. If you can get to their very early happy hour, they have some great selections. The only downside is the night we were there, the open kitchen caused us all to smell like campfire when we got home. SO worth it!

Darla & Carolyn's Birthday Porch

1815 K Street
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 444-2423

We have a lot of April birthdays which make our Thursdays amazing! Darla picked the Porch for a good old southern dinner and we even got a bonus birthday Carolyn! We had a great showing with unicorn horns and punch bowls. The servers were great with our ever growing party and the food was delicious.

Birthday unicorn Carolyn
Baby unicorn is not so certain about these shenanigans.
Birthday Darla had a punch bowl with a Jenny assist.
Their version of a hot brown.
The ridiculous burger.
This was half of the fried chicken.
Full house of drunks!

Brian's Birthday at La Trattoria

3649 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 455-7803

Brian is such a smart guy. For his birthday he took us to La Trattoria, a new one for the drunks. Even though I wasn't there, I know it was delicious because I got some leftovers. Hearty, flavorful Czech food that is perfect for a cold day.

And as is tradition, we bought amazing toys for Brian to donate to Toys for Tots but made him open them anyway.

Disclaimer: This blog post was during the dark days of blogging lameness. My apologies for the crappy post.

Bonn Lair

3651 J St
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 455-7155

We were a little depressed being back from Sea Ranch and had a small group that drowned their sorrows in pints of beer, cider and comfort food. We commandeered the small lounge area in the back and had a fine time even though we had no view of the ocean.

Bonn Lair

3651 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95816-5425
(916) 455-7155

A wee small group of drunks were left on their own while some were in Vegas, some were on vacation and some were doing work things.

This is what happened...

And probably more, but that is to come when the special journal is found and cataloged.

Espanol Italian Restaurant

5723 Folsom Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95819
(916) 457-1936

It's the Italian restaurant with the Spanish name and supposedly the oldest restaurant in Sacramento. Not much has changed since this place opened and that is the drawback and the charm depending on how you look at it.

We have a lovely waitress and the minestrone soup and salad are pretty delicious. Spaghetti got an okay vote, but you come here for the charm, or so I'm told. Actually I wasn't there at all. I'm piecing this together from our journal and RobotGoBen's leftovers.

I'll go ahead and apologize for this half-assed post. I really need to get a blogging backup for the Thursdays I miss.

Truly sorry. I can't give you back your 25 seconds you wasted here. Please pick another post to read.

Bonn Lair

3651 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 455-7155

Small group week always leads us to Bonn Lair. And I have no idea what happened this week. Sometimes when I miss a week I can recreate it in my mind from the journal entries but damn, they're weird. It's a whole lot of talk about sausages, nipples, Patrick Swayze, Russian accents, an onion-licker and a narwhal. I was more confused by the time I was done and now I fear nightmares.

I'm glad I was in Iceland.

The Shack

5201 Folsom Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95819
(916) 457-5997

We end up at the Shack about once a year (March 2009, July 2008) and it makes us wonder why it always takes us so long to come back. The kitchen is open until 8 pm serving up really good hamburgers, pastrami and other specialties like fish & chips. As long as you are in by 8 for some grub they are pretty kick back about how long you stay and drink.

And boy, can you drink here! They're beer menu is extensive to say the least. Lots of interesting things on tap and many, many more in bottles. Gary, the owner is super knowledgeable as is his staff. They will point you in the right direction.

The think I love about this place is that one minute the guy is helping me pick my next beer and telling off-color jokes and the next he is giving a kid a bowl of water for his puppy and making sure he takes some doggie biscuits too. It's such a friendly neighborhood place but with just enough sass to make it fun.

We had a large crowd this week with a couple guys from the #BeerTweetup stopping by and a trio of Sometimes Drunks that came out as well. Pretty much we were so busy talking and giving our server a hard time I didn't really see what other folks were eating.

I have to say that I think you make your own fun here. If you walked in and were quiet, got the beer you always get and just ate dinner - you may not love it. If however, you chat up the servers, try some new stuff and bring a couple of friends - you'll hang out longer than you planned and enjoy yourself.

The Tail of Two Drunks

Undisclosed Donner Lake Cabin - AND -

Bonn Lair
3651 J St
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 455-7155

Captain Crabby Pants finally proved his worth by digging up an uncle with a kickass cabin on Donner. For some reason the uncle let us all use said kickass cabin for the weekend. A few of us were left behind for crappy reason and therefore I will now refer to the kickass cabin as the lame cabin because I am bitter. And hostile. And angry. And cabin-less. Yes, I was left behind.

So, the remaining awesome drunks ended up at Bonn Lair to drown our bitterness in beer. We love to go here when we are a small group since it's a tiny place. The fish and chips are delicious and enough for two. The have lambic, Allegash white on tap and other great beers. They really have a wonderful selection to choose from. Many sausages were consumed as well.

We had a guest star, John who joined us which was fun! He put our sad party of three up to a merry band of four. And he bought me a beer. I like him.

Onespeed Pizza

Onespeed Pizza
4818 Folsom Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95819
(916) 706-1748

Was it the best pizza in Sacramento? It was good. And I could understand how you'd be stoaked if this place was in your neighborhood. Really, I'd go with one of those giant calzones that looked "like Stewie Griffin's head" according to Shooter. Yummy wines, good selection of beer, nice bicycle themed decor, and as always good company.

For all the Yelpers harping on their rude service, we found their staff to be quite pleasant. Bump started a list of names of groups (you know, like a "Murder of Crows"): we had a 'Crying of Emos', a 'Douchery of Dudes', and a 'Purging of Bulimics'.

Cafe Morocco - The Birth of Jarla

1221 Alhambra Blvd # 107
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 731-4637

Jarla was born in a rickety barn, so the legend says. And for the celebration of her birth, she chose Cafe Morocco. We had a super full house! All the regulars, plus Slug, Crab & Lexie were back. Frankenstein and friends of Mr. Chem were there for a total of 14 drunks!

First off our waitress was kick-ass! Very friendly, sassy, and poured some full glasses of wine. Even offered the birthday girl a top-off on her wine. Nice! I swear if you are nice and fun, we will enjoy just about all of the rest, no matter what happens!

The garlic chicken, chicken sumac and tagine seemed to be the hot items for the night. All of them were good, along with one of my favorite soups in the Sacramento area. So good.

We were having such a nice (loud) time that we actually drove a couple away. We are sorry. We are just too fun for others some times.

Our waitress, Tina, even signed our journal... even though we scared people off we are in her top five nights at the Cafe Morocco. Nice!

Journal Tidbits:
Don't put it there...it'll hurt." - TheJenny

PS. Sluggy made a Jarla puppet (a la the muppets), in honor of her birthday. It was so cute!

PPS. Dear god drunks! Send me some damn pictures for this damn blog!!! How will people skim my writing with no photo payoff at the end?

The Shack

5201 Folsom Blvd,
Sacramento
(916) 457-5997

The Shack (aka the Sub Shack), started serving dinner all the time! The menu looked fab, we love Gary, so we had to head out there.

The crappy thing is that RobotGoBen was working, Scribby was icky sicky, NakedBob, TheJenny, Mr Chemistry, and Shooter were all somewhere else doing something else, Sluggy was still doing Thursday classes. Crabby brought baby Lexie, so it was a small, but fun crowd that got to enjoy the evening at The Shack.

Since I was the sicky one, I have nothing to report other than Jarla said the mac & cheese was to die for! All I can say is that I can't believe that it WASN'T fabulous, so I declare - Fabulous!

Bonn Lair

Bonn Lair
3651 J St
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 455-7155

This Thursday took us to East Sac, and one of our very favorite places. Since we hover around 10 people a week, Bonn Lair is tough when the whole gang comes out. But we were down three world travellers, Croatian Jarla, Kiwi TheJenny & NakedBob, so we had a better chance of fitting.

This is a gem of a neighborhood pub, and each time we are here I lament the fact that we don't live within walking distance. The folks who run it have a great formula and don't screw with it. Small cozy pub, fabulous beers and wine, delicious pub grub, tons of regulars and actual British music, (what, no Jeff Foxworthy like some other unnammed 'British' pub?).

We always camp out in the cozy little snug with some comfy chairs, barrel table and mismatched chairs. All in all, we had a whopping 6 people, but it nice a roomy for once.

Since I am a girl, I love their Strongbow on tap, and Lambic in bottles. Yummy. Dinner was all over the place with the group. Pasties, Shepherd's Pie, Fish & Mash and Bangers and Beans. I still can't believe they make all of it in a super tiny kitchen. It was all delicious.

The crappy thing for the evening was a guy turns around, knocks right into one of the three people who work there, hit the tray full of food he was carrying which fell everywhere. His response? Shoulder shrug, "sorry", and walked away. Yeah, a little more apologetic, oh and maybe helpful in some way would have suited the situation a bit better. Jerk.

Most of the conversation centered around politics (man, we need to stop paying attention so much!). Even talked to the people next to us.

Over all, a nice relaxed, chill evening out at a pub. Just what is supposed to happen.

The Shack

5201 Folsom Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95819
(916) 457-5997

It's been hotter than hell in Sacramento this week, and with all the wildfires, the air quality is awful. So, when Thursday rolled around, I wasn't totally excited about sitting outside for dinner even though the Shack is one of our favorite places for Thursday.

Then I got the email from Gary with the menu. Hawaiian. Complete with Ahi poke, Spam musubi, Kalua pork, pineapple fried rice - all grumpiness was gone!

If you've never been to one of their Thursday dinners, you are missing out. You show up, get settled down with a drink, listen to some great live music and wait till dinner is ready. It's a real neighborhood feel, but not snobby. Very kick back, dog and kid friendly. Eventually dinners ready and it's family/buffet style. And you will get dizzy looking and the wall of wine and beer choices.

A couple of us got there early, had drinks and played cards. By the time everyone else showed up we had moved outside and a nice breeze started. The food was terrific as always and we met a couple of fun people.

Journal Tidbit: German party is happening this weekend so outfits were discussed. Lederhosen was brought up as an option and that digressed into Thongerhosen. Yes - half thong/half hosen. Hand knitted of course.
