Bastille Day 2016
We are lucky drunks. Most of us have spent time in France over the years so we have a special place in our hearts for Bastille Day. Each year, we celebrate in some fashion and this year was marred by the attack in Nice at a place a lot of us have been. It's hard to handle a tragedy on any day, but on a celebration day, it's even harder.
Alas, we still did what we do best. Spend quality time with friends with quality food and drinks.
We were awash in french wine, and foods like garlic haricot verts, street sandwiches of ham and Camembert, cold herbed beef, tomato and carrot salad, grilled veggies, cheesy gougeres, white bean and tuna salad, fondue and grilled peaches. It's as a lovely night.

Track 7 Brewing Natomas
Sacramento, CA 95835
Track 7 recently moved into the North Natomas neighborhood with a giant new production warehouse and added a tap room to the front corner. It has tons of room (compared to the Curtis Park location) with lots of tables, a cool railing with room for your beer, a huge patio with grassy area and food trucks most days.
It's a great addition to the area and the staff are great. Oh, and with rotating taps there is always a beer you'll like. It's fun trying to work your way through the beers.
Check it out!

Hawaiian Ben's Birthday
Ben had a birthday. Ben also went to Kauai recently. Therefore, Ben gets Hawaiian birthday Thursday!
This was a fun one. The list of Hawaiian food was this: two kinds of SPAM musubi, kalua pork, mac salad, spicy SPAM fried rice, Hawaiian rolls, salad with sesame dressing, pineapple, Hawaiian potato chips, tuna/albacor/salmon poke with ogo seaweed I smuggled back from Kauai, macadamia nut cookies and Koloa Rum mai tais.
Add all that with about 20 drunks, 3 kids with a job of saying "aloha" at the door and handing out leis, a giant set of 40 mylar balloons and it was a damn fine night!
Happy birthday Ben!

Chili Lounge
After all that New Years Whatnot, we wanted a quiet house Thursday to just calm things down. We hosted at our place with some homemade turkey chili, cornbread and toppings. Emily made us French 75's to keep us surly and folks tried out the new lounge area with our fancy new chairs. Successful Thursday.

Oshima Sushi & Fugu Lounge
Sacramento, CA 95834
(916) 515-1958
Back in the young days of North Natomas, this was a humble little sushi restaurant and the only one in the area. They done some major redesign with the place and added on the Fugu Lounge part so now you have a restaurant half and a swanky bar/lounge half. It's not as terrible as it sounds...
Since we are lame and didn't make reservations we ended up in the back of the lounge area. Honestly, it was kind of fun. The white booth, low tables and movable ottomans make for a nice atmosphere. The thumpy, thumpy music didn't fit in with a sushi place but I have to admit it was fun.
The only downside to the space was the lack thereof. When ordering plates of sushi that require a soy sauce dish, bottle of sake, and water glass we started running out of room on the small table very quickly. Admittedly, that area was not designed for 10 people to eat a full meal so I can't hold it against them.
The sushi is good and not terribly expensive. In my opinion it's the best in Natomas and better than a lot of other places. They also have some really good happy hour deals and a half-price sushi deal in the afternoon on weekends. They also go all out for football games. I know, I know, it seems like a weird mix again, but it seems to work.

Chili Night & Sac Town Ice Cream
For 2010 we are invading our member's houses once a month to try to cut down on some costs, and also because it's fun!
This week we were in the home of me, Scribby & RobotGoBen. Menu was turkey chili & cornbread with honey butter. Chili is good, but it's better when you have these toppings to choose from: cheddar cheese, pepper jack cheese, jalapenos, cayenne pepper, green onions, white onions, sour cream, tomatoes and BACON!
After dinner we walked over to Sac Town Ice Cream to get a little dessert. This place is rad. Just an old fashion ice cream parlor serving Gunther's, a Sacramento favorite. It's a lovely addition to the North Natomas area.
The the Last Night on Earth was put on the table and we played some zombie board game - wow, that makes us sound super dorky. Whatever, we have the booze.
We put the fatal blow on the 15 litre wine keg, it's dead now. Thanks to MAS Wines for giving us a nice challenge.

Tour de France & Birth of Dr. Beaky
Welcome back to the honorable Doctors!!! Dr. Smooth & Dr. Beaky have moved back to the area, we like to believe because of us. They bring with them the 2 year old Fire Pig (TM) and newly made Natty Ice. Poor kids have nicknames since birth. I'm sure they will grow to hate them. Heehee.
Anyhoo, it's Dr. Beacky's birthday so everyone came over to cram in 13 people and 3 kids into our condo. She got a lovely handmade puppet of her very own from Sluggy. She even made the same face as the puppet without even trying, just lovely.
We had one of our faves, French Lunch. Basically, everyone just brings an item that is delicious and goes well together. Our spread was french bread, challah, foccacia, bruscetta, crackers, prosciutto, pepper salami, brie, goat cheese, fresh mozzarella, grapes, apples, olives, basil tomatoes, red peppers, artichoke hearts, olive & vinegar, roasted garlic and turkey. Get yourself a plate and mix & match how you like it. Oh, and lots of wine.
To add to the French flare, we also watched the Tour de France individual time trial in Anncey. The tour was pretty damn good this year and the time trial didn't disappoint.
We were so busy catching up, being loud and eating, we forgot the journal for most of the night. Sorry journal, we still love you -- just not as much at the good Doctors, wine and food. Next time, we promise.

Malabar - In a whispered voice
Sacramento, CA 95834
(916) 574-9074
Breaking News!!! Dr. Becky and the honorable Doctor Smooth (Thursday Drunks expats living in San Luis Obispo), had a baby girl today! That's right, they scheduled their c-section on a Thursday, cause that's how they roll. Baby Natalie is officially the newest in the Drunk family. Her older brother Jack "Fire Pig" was also a Thursday baby. The Doctors are really representing with this whole child bearing thing. Cheers!! Oh and the campaign to get them back to this area is doing very well.
We were a smaller crowd. Down a NakedBob and Mr. Chem. Reservations were not made so RobotGoBen and I showed up about 15 minutes early to get a drink and sort out the table. The hostess was dumber than bricks. I don't usually like to bag on the staff in our posts, but my god it took 5 minutes to sort out table for 10, 7 pm. How many ways can I make that clearer. Best was when she looked at my, GoBen and the random lady he was talking to and asked, is your whole party here? No.
Then we moved to the bar, and our waitress there rocked! Martini and beers in less than 5 minutes. As everyone showed up, she rocked out more drinks. Even gave us the benefit of the doubt on the happy hour prices. That's when you over tip obscenely.
Dinner was good. They seriously have a giant menu with everything from meat loaf to Mexican to seared ahi, pizzas and everything in between.
Overall it was good, but the bar waitress was the highlight. Go to have drinks, app specials at the bar and you will be alright.

Straw Hat Pizza - Natomas
Sacramento
(916) 515-1559
To celebrate a very belated birth of Bumpy, we headed out to Natomas for some cracker crust Straw Hat Pizza. We were down a NakedBob and TheJenny who were spending some quality time with their kitten (RIP Tummy Chin), and up two sometimes-drunks couples. Nice crowd all around. And Sluggy made it out after her class she is teaching right around the corner.
We usually really like the Straw Hat. Cheap wine in chilled glasses, tasty pizza and the shared salad plate. The only bummer this time was the Ridiculous size pizza was, how shall I say, a little flaccid. Not crunchy, just a little soggy. Nairb thought it hadn't been left in long enough. Other than that, it was good.
We celebrated with a lovely ice blue bundt cake with sparkly frosty and confetti innards (care of Momma J and TheJenny). I perfectly manly cake for Bumpy Truck.
The Doorknob Bandit struck again with two more Rock Band related notes on Shooters door...it's so weird.
Conversation was all over the place as seen by the Journal Tidbits below:

Straw Hat Pizza
4441 East Commerce Way
Natomas, CA 95834
(916) 515-1515
This week we gathered at the Straw Hat Pizza in Natomas. It's a kind of weird location across from Arco Arean, in a fancy modern building, but that damn cracker crust is just how we remember it.
The fact that they call the huge pizza the "Ridiculous" is fantastic. It didn't hurt that the guy gave me a free glass of wine. What can I say, I'm easy. The place is always a little short staffed, but the people who are there are nice and helpful. The pizza comes out freaking hot and pretty fast. Can't complain. They were out of the Merlot, but had Cab instead - so all was right with the world.
We had a full house except for Nairby who was at the vet with his cat. He called in and told us she was okay, and that he knew what cat did it, then exclaimed that he would 'take care' of him. Hmm, wonder what that means.
The Republican National Convention was on the gigantic TV next to us, so we had our topic for the evening. Most of which is more than R rated, so won't make it on this blog. Here are some of the slogans/comments that we made or had heard lately.
Bowties for McCain
The Maverick & the MILF
Game: Spot the Minority, that took awhile
Tits for America
Other than that, it was a standard night of a lot of beer/wine and delicious pizza! Shooter got the leftovers to take home.
