El Azteca Roseville

4006 Foothills Blvd
Roseville, CA 95747
(916)772-6682

Bump is OOOOOOOLLLLDDDDDD! On his actual birthday we took over El Azteca in Roseville for some damn fine Mexican food, huge margaritas and a giant tower of gifts for the birthday Bump. The theme this years seemed to be socks, socks, oh and socks. His feet will be fresh and warm all winter long.

For the price and easy, this place is awesome. They recently expanded a bit so there is even more room. The walk up and order system keeps the prices low and the convenience high. With over a dozen drunks strolling in, this is perfect for us.

Scottish Potato Night

Undisclosed Roseville Location

There is a really amazing little shop in Edinburgh Scotland called the Baked Potato Shop with the self professed "Hottest Tattie in Town". A few of us drunks loved going there and this week The Jenny & Naked Bob were kind enough to host a tater night!

Step 1: rub giant potatoes in butter and sprinkle with a lot of salt.
Step 2: bake them for a long time
Step 3: top with everything under the sun.
Step 4: eat

Some of the topping options include: sour cream, cheese, pepper, salt, butter, raw mushrooms, bacon, chives, tomatoes, hummus, baked beans, onions, avocado and my favorite - mushrooms mixed with sour cream.

For drinks there was lots of beer & cider and the very Scottish Irn-Bru and vodka. It's sort of like a bubblegum, fluoride, cotton candy flavored soda. Nothing else quite like it.

Such a great theme for a house party. Just add bagpipe music and enjoy!

Magpie Cafe

1409 R Street #102
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 452-7594

Your blogger had a birthday and she picked Magpie. They have recently moved their baking operation offsite to the Yellowbill Cafe that they opened. Which let them take out their salad cold case and make more room for tables. Which is good because we showed up with 17 people! It was still a bit of a juggle to get table space, but they are just so nice and helpful that it all worked out.

Three orders of the pork belly appetizers with persimmon and frisee showed up as a gift from the kitchen. Damn it was tasty and so very nice of them. Seriously they treat us so well. Another big hit that night was the pot roast which is enough for two! I had the mixed veg plate which always seems pricey, but I never regret getting it. A large amount of fun, delicious and unusual vegetables are roasted and perfect.

They have a nice wine and beer selection to go with their amazing food and the bread pudding is especially good for dessert. A wonderful night of drunks, drinks and delicious food. I love this place.

Alonzo's Pizza Depot

7054 Sunrise Blvd
Citrus Heights, CA 95610

Tucked away in a very plain strip mall in Citrus Heights, Alonzo's is a hidden gem. It looks like it has been there for decades and maybe it has. Run by a husband and wife, the place is small but has some damn tasty deep dish pizza. They serve wine in a carafe (a lots option these days), and have a few beers on tap.

Brian picked this place to celebrate his birth. Sticking to tradition we all by him toys, usually age and sex inappropriate, that are then donated to Toys for Tots for the holidays. He's such a thoughtful guy.

We rearranged the tables in the middle and had over a dozen people. For a measly $10 a person we were stuffed on pizza, wings and salad. Throw in a few more bucks for drinks and it is such a great value! If you are in the area and have a giant hunger, try it out.

Citizen Hotel List Party & Grange

926 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 447-2700

The Citizen Hotel did a fun little party to celebrate the unveiling of their local and topical Naughty & Nice list in their display window. Downstairs was the nice area and upstairs at the Scandal Bar was the naughty area. It was a great little set up with lots of people despite the horrendous weather. They has some specialty cocktails, Santa's helpers, a photo booth and snow floating down into the lobby.

We had over a dozen drunks and sometimes drunks dress up fancy and show up for the shindig and eventually sat down for dinner at the Grange. One of the better restaurants in Sacramento, their food is always top-notch. A bit pricey for a Thursday, but what the hell - it was delicious.

There were lovely photos of the party, the fancy drunks and the gorgeous dinner. But they died along with my phone that weekend. Sorry, you just have to imagine how well we clean up.

Drink with Your Family Day 2012

Another year of Drink with Your Family Day! Since it always falls on a Thursday, we encourage the drunks to share their meal photos and drink to make the family easier to handle. Well done drunks. Well done!

Zocalo Roseville

1182 Roseville Parkway
Roseville, CA 95678
(916) 788-0303

Zocalo has expanded to Roseville at the Fountains taking over the old Tres Agaves location. Seems like a good fit since Zocalo is a little more upscale than other Mexican restaurants. I think you pay for the location more than anything since the prices are high. The food is good, but it didn't blow any of the drunks away. For the options around that area, it's nice that it is there but might not make the top of the list. It is, however, a great place to take a pit stop, drink good margaritas and get a snack if you are doing a hard day of mall shopping.

Fox & Goose

1001 R Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 443-8825

Small  group of dedicated drunks this week! Fox & Goose recently took over the space behind them so now they have an event space and fancy new bathrooms with giant underground signage. If you remember the old bathrooms, you know this is a big freaking deal!

This place is an old stand by. Good beers on tap, and expansive menu of traditional pub grub with some nice lighter choices, veggie options and much more. They usually have a small band in the bar area, so if it's not your scene, just get seated in the dining area.

American River Brewing Company

11151 Trade Center Drive, Ste 104
Rancho Cordova, CA 95670

This is one of the newer brewers in the area, but they have opened a tasting room in their brew space located in an industrial area of Rancho Cordova. Some nights they will have a food truck out front but normally it's just some pretzels and cozy space to try their beers.

They have some interesting beers and rotate them out pretty often. The folks are really nice and if this is near your place, you should just go, hang out and have a good beer.

I tried the sampler of all 6 beers on tap and like their blonde and their English version of an IPA the best. The red was also a favorite.

Bottom line, go try it out even though it's in a weird little warehouse building. Totally worth it.

Uncle Vito's

1501 16th Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 444-3699

Usually a really great place to get a cheap slice of pizza and a stiff drink or beer. Unfortunately the World Series was happening. Not their best moment due to the plethora of baseball fans. Oh well.

Kolbeh Kabob

8700 Greenback Lane
Orangevale, CA 95662
(916) 990-0233

Persian food is magic. Delicious, flavorful and make great leftovers. We always start with Sahbzee which is flatbread, a pile of herbs, some feta and red onion. You butter some bread and pile it all on. So tasty!

They have lots of great stews and specialties but I always end up with the kabobs. Chicken koobidah is my favorite. Ground, spiced meats formed onto a kabob and served with rice and grilled tomatoes. Sprinkle the lemony Sumac on your rice and you are set!

They also brought us out a treat - the crispy rice from the bottom of the pot. Sometimes served with stew over the top, it is just a crunchy buttery treat.

This place is in a long forgotten strip mall in Orangevale, but some of the best Persian we've had in Sacramento. The staff are lovely and gracious. Check them out.

Masullo

2711 Riverside Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95818
(916) 443-8929

I can't really say more about Masullo. Search for it on this blog and you will read all the reviews from all the times we've been here.

So, just for you - a cornucopia of Creepy Baby Hand photos! Creepy Baby Hand came from a zombie wedding bouquet that I made once. It now travels with us every week. It likes to touch people.

And don't miss out on another classic Portrait by Naked Bob at the bottom of the page. This one is of Jessica. Just lovely.

Pour House

1910 Q Street
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 706-2465

Pour house is another place that is going the retro, prohibition style motif with hipster bartenders in vests and tattoos. The cocktails are good and the food is done by the folks that brought you Coast to Coast food truck. That is what brought us here.

We hit up the Roseville Food Truck night a while back and had the mac n' cheese from Coast to Coast and the Reuben. Damn, they were both delicious! The food at Pourhouse might be a tad on the pricey side, but being able to eat it with booze (that you didn't bring on your person) is a plus.

It's loud and fun inside and the clientele leans toward the younger, hipper Sacramentan. I would hit this place up for happy hour sometime and see if it's strikes your fancy. It struck ours and we'll be back.

Sizzle Mongolian BBQ

1230 Sunset Blvd
Rocklin, CA 95677
(916) 663-5672

What to say...what to say...  Mongolian BBQ is a very unique thing to eat since you build it yourself and then they stir fry up your creation. All Mongolian is good, but some are better and this is one of the better ones. Better is usually because of more variety and extra fun toppings. Sizzle Mongolian has both. If you are in the area, check it out.

Hamburger Patties

1630 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 441-4240

Why did it take us so long to get back here? The wait staff are sassy fun and the food is solid. All the burgers and sandwiches were good, the fries were great and our server was kind enough to give us a dessert to share. It's sometimes tough to get in here with a large group but we did just fine with our 12+ people since the big table in the back was open.

We need to add this one back onto the once-yearly list. It's getting crowded on there.

Food Truck Round Up - Roseville

Downtown Roseville
Second Thursday of the Month

Yay for Roseville embracing some food trucks to help spice up downtown Roseville! It was a great showing of at least a few thousand people milling around with their families, dogs, friends and enjoying a great array of mobile food.

A lot of the Drunks hit up Chando's for some tacos. Some very good sandwiches and mac n' cheese at Coast to Coast. And dessert at the Volks Waffle. They had seating, lots of trash and recycling and live music.

We brought our own traveling booze and hit some bars afterwards. All and all a great idea for Roseville and a damn fine time.
