Sausage Party, the Movie

Folsom Century 14
261 Iron Point Road
Folsom, CA 95630
(916) 353-5247

I'll admit, this movie was not on my radar at all, but when a drunk suggests something, it's usually a good idea. So off to the good old fashion movie theater for a Thursday. We knew a couple of things: It was a Seth Rogan movie with a lot of his go-to partners in crime like Paul Rudd, James Franco, Michael Cera and it was about food finding out they are being eaten.

What we didn't know is that this is a fully offensive, hilarious, almost x-rated animated movie that basically picks on every taboo topic around. It's silly, terrible and fabulous. Don't see it if you are easily offended. Do see it if you want to be entertained in the filthiest way.

South

2005 11th Street
Sacramento, CA 95818
(916) 382-9722

Man, this fried chicken is amazing. And yes, they do sell it in a bucket in case you need more. We knew that, and that is why we came here. It's always challenging to find a space here but once you do, dig into some fabulous chicken. The kale is just perfect, not too salty and not overcooked.

The surprising thing was that they had a Nashville hot chicken sandwich that was off the charts. Places tend to make Nashville hot chicken a little sweet to offset the hot, which isn't how it should be. So South nailed it with a creamy sauce and pickles. I hope they keep that on the menu!

Nixtaco

1805 Cirby Way #12
Roseville, CA 95661
(916) 771-4165

A lot of our foodie friends have been trekking out to Roseville to eat tacos at Nixtaco so we had to try it. Their taco sampler (of adorable mini tacos), is a great way to sample it all. The veggie was was surprisingly good, the barbacoa was delicious and the carnitas and other pork ones were good but I couldn't figure out which was which, sorry! They have a nice selection of local beers and their black beans were great! Along with server yourself blue corn chips and this place is a great addition. Counter service also helps us with drops in, and large parties.

Hot Italian Birthdays

1627 16th Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 444-3000

Well damn. We went out of town for our anniversary and of course, the drunks doubled up their birthday game and celebrated two drunks with a huge group of peeps. I'm sure they had a evening full of pizza, beer, wine and laughs. I'm sad I missed it.

PS: I did get a text asking if their house red was good. I'm glad they did because the last time it was very sweet. I guided her to house prosecco. I love getting booze tip texts!

Bastille Day 2016

Undisclosed Natomas Location

We are lucky drunks. Most of us have spent time in France over the years so we have a special place in our hearts for Bastille Day. Each year, we celebrate in some fashion and this year was marred by the attack in Nice at a place a lot of us have been. It's hard to handle a tragedy on any day, but on a celebration day, it's even harder.

Alas, we still did what we do best. Spend quality time with friends with quality food and drinks.

We were awash in french wine, and foods like garlic haricot verts, street sandwiches of ham and Camembert, cold herbed beef, tomato and carrot salad, grilled veggies, cheesy gougeres, white bean and tuna salad, fondue and grilled peaches. It's as a lovely night.

Mandarin Kitchen

167 Sacramento Street
Auburn, CA 95603
(530) 745-4098

This little place is in the old section of Auburn and it doesn't look like much but damn, is it good! They make their own dumplings (not pictured because we demolished them), and their own noodles. Everything from their Thai curry to their meat dumpling was just delicious. I've dreamed about these dumplings...must go back soon....

Taco Night at the Orange House

Undisclosed Roseville Location

Tacos! Tacos! Tacos!

Who doesn't love tacos? And last year while visiting a cousin drunk in Spain we had her Puerto Rican tacos that were so good and different! So, The Jenny hounded her for the recipe and made it for all of us. And damn, they are good! Things you wouldn't expect is the huge amount of capers and green olives.

There were also other tacos, but we don't need to talk about them.

And yes, Nairb brought his own food. Such a snob. (Or really nice guy because we didn't RSVP and didn't want to eat other peoples tacos.)

Tank House BBQ & Bar

1925 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 431-7199

This place has some of the best barbecue in Sacramento. They slow roast their meats over fire and flame to make some very delicious brisket, ribs and more. Their greens are tasty but not overcooked and who doesn't love tater tots! It's a great place to feed your inner carnivore.

Nido, by Magpie

1409 R Street #102
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 668-7594

We've hit up Nido more times than most places because it's just so good, affordable and easy. When heading to B-Side, we ate here beforehand. But this week, we gave it our full attention. We hustled a table on the porch and just spent the evening sharing food, drinking beer and wine and watching Sacramento go by. Pulled pork sandwiches, housemade sausages on housemade pretzel buns, heirloom bean soup, giant pretzels, pork belly bao and so much more. And it won't break the bank. We can't recommend this place enough.

Gather Oak Park

3rd Avenue at Broadway
Oak Park, CA 95817
(916) 692-5560

Gather is one of those great Sacramento events that I can't recommend enough. It's a lovely evening of food, drinks, music and running into friends. Yes, parking is a hassle some times and yes, you have to stand in line for drinks and food, but if you just enjoy the vibe, the music and the people, it's a great neighborhood festival.

It's just too bad we can't get there more often than once a year.

India House Folsom

2776 E Bidwell Street #300
Folsom, CA 95630
(916) 817-4356

Jesse picked this new place for us this week for his birthday and wow, good job Jesse. This is a small place in one of dozens of shopping centers off Bidwell Road and I don't think I would have ever found it without a suggestion.

We went family style and had everything from chicken tikka to goat biryani. It was so very delicious with rich flavors and nice amounts of spice. Thanks Jesse for taking us here!

Old Town Pizza

120 Church Street
Roseville, CA 95678
(916) 668-7655

Old Town Pizza is a great addition to the old Roseville area. It's huge so you can pack more than 20 drunks and birthday girl Jenny's family into many tables. They have an old fashion and delicious pizza with a thick, chewy crust and very tasty toppings. They also have a great beer menu with lots of local and craft choices. Their salads are large enough to share and the garlic bread is tasty. Overall, this place is perfect for your large pizza parties. Can't wait to have that pizza again.

Also, happy birthday The Jenny! You are the best of us.

Distillery & Zelda's

2107 L Street
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 443-8815

We'll we missed the kitchen at the Distillery but the drinks are strong and there is plenty of space. A phone order and a short walk brought us some Zelda's pizza to go along with our gin tonics and beers. Low key night was perfect for us to share stories about our trip last year at this time. Also, many jokes about the misspelled "bartener". Are there three of them?

Elk Grove Food Trucks

Nottoli Park, Elk Grove

We traveled out to Elk Grove to join our good Doctors at their local park for a Sacramento Food Truck rally. The burgers from Cluck n' Chuck were so good! We hung out in the park for a while before heading back to our host house to cocktail and firepit for a while. Lovely night!

B-Side

1430 S Street
Sacramento, CA 95811

When the birthday Bob wants to hit B-Side, we hit B-Side. We pre-partied at Nido for some yummy grub (that sausage!), then wandered over to B-Side. We sort of forgot it was Cinco de Mayo, but taking over the front booth/table let us kind of do our own thing without dealing with amateur night.

Bob hates straws in drinks so after about the fourth Jameson and ginger, the rad bartender gave him his own birthday straw-extravaganza! So wonderful.

PS. B-Side is just a solid bar run by solid people. It's always a great place to drop in for a drink.

Revolution Wine

2831 S Street
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 444-7711

Can we talk about the deal that is their Thursday night burger for $15 that comes with a glass of red wine? Steal of a deal and that burger was delicious! We also go a side order of chips and those were worth every penny. Nice a crisp, extra potato-y, nice level of salt - great paring with some wine. We haven't been here for so long and I can't remember why because it is sold.

Thursday, April 21, 2016

Samurai Sushi

12251 Folsom Blvd
Rancho Cordova, CA 95742
(916) 353-1112

Nairby had a birthday! We picked a place close to him so the whole family, including baby could make it out with the drunks. We miss our Nairby!

Thursday, April 14, 2016

Auburn Thai

175 Palm Ave
Auburn, CA 95603
(530) 887-8696

Our birthday Darla asked for Auburn Thai for her birthday because it's closer to her house and it's delicious! I missed this week which makes me sad but red velvet cake was sent home to this sad blogger so all it right with the world.

Thursday, April 7, 2016

Magpie Cafe

1601 16th Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 452-7594

Magpie started their Thursday night fried chicken dinner and we had to check it out. $80 might sound like a lot for fried chicken, but we ordered two orders for 10 people and it was plenty. It came with biscuits, greens, beans, mashed potatoes - all the fixings!

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Bonn Lair

3651 J Street
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 455-7155

Our favorite place to go when we know we'll be a small crowd. Shepard's pie, pasties, fine British ales and cozy seating. Just a night for conversations and catching up.

Thursday, March 24, 2016

Monk's Cellar

240 Vernon Street
Roseville, CA 95678
(916) 786-6665

We love our Monk's Cellar. The food is so good and the beers are great. The chef even sent out more fries which is always appreciated. Bob was sad because some drunks were missing. Poor Bob.

Thursday, March 17, 2016

Sea Ranch 2016

Man, oh man, Sea Ranch was as food as ever. Three house, 19 drunks and ALL the view! There is nothing wrong with five days near the ocean, eating, drinking, walking, relaxing, and anything else anyone wanted to do. Thank you Sea Ranch, you are our favorite.

Thursday, March 10, 2016

Fair Oaks Brew Pub

7988 California Ave
Fair Oaks, CA 95628

This little gem is tucked away in old Fair Oaks and is pretty tiny. Crammed full of happy drinkers, this brew pub is family friendly, a little chaotic, delicious and cozy. The pretzel is solid, the options are simple but good and their beer selection is on point. Overall, if you can carve out space, grab a seat with some friends and enjoy the night.

Thursday, March 3, 2016

The Federalist Public House

2009 Matsui Alley
Sacramento, CA 95811
(916) 661-6134

We love this place. It's so easy with pay-at-the-register pizza and beer, lovely space and just a great midtown spot. They had a great selection of beer for Beer Week, we celebrated our Emily and all tried on Jenny's glasses, which looked great on everyone!

Thursday, February 25, 2016

Nela's Mexican Restaurant

242 Vernon Street
Roseville, CA 95678
(916) 783-9992

We needed some cheap, easy deliciousness and Nela's hits the spot. Just good old fashion tacos, enchilada plates and burritos. Of course, we didn't take any photos because we were just too busy shoveling food into our faces.

Thursday, February 18, 2016

Hawk's Public House

1525 Alhambra Blvd
Sacramento, CA 95816
(916) 588-4440

John wanted to check out this more casual version of the very lovely and fancy Hawk's out in Granite Bay for his birthday. It was top notch! Really well done and subtle cocktails and all the food was perfectly balanced and delicious. It's a small space but worth the wait to get in. If you can get to their very early happy hour, they have some great selections. The only downside is the night we were there, the open kitchen caused us all to smell like campfire when we got home. SO worth it!

Hot Italian - Ben's Birthday

1627 16th Street
Sacramento, CA 95814
(916) 444-3000

Ben has a soft spot for great pizza, a giant round table and more than a dozen drunks for his birthday and Hot Italian hits the spot. All of the 18 drunks ate copious amounts of pizza and drank to the health of the birthday boy.

Thursday, February 4, 2016

Fat Rabbit

825 Sutter Street
Folsom, CA 95630
(916) 985-3289

When two of the babies in the group turn one, we take them on their first pub crawl! We'll, they crawled in the pub. Fat Rabbit is the perfect family pub and we thoroughly took over the space with kids, beers, vittles and babies. They have a great pretzel, a nice selection of European beers, fish and chips, Shepard's pie - all very good. One year old and they are well on their way to be proud Thursday Drunks!

Thursday, January 28, 2016

B-Side

1430 S Street
Sacramento, CA 95811

Oh, the old Monte Carlo never looked (or smelled) so good! The Shady Lady folks took over the little dive bar on the corner of S & 15th and turned it into a really find audiofile bar. It's nice and simple with strong drinks and all vinyl on the turntables. No food makes things simple and with so many restaurant options within a couple blocks, it's pretty perfect. We also hear that they still honor old Monte Carlo drink tokens for a well drink. Nice!

Robert Burns Dinner

Once a year, our Scottish Drunks host a dinner in honor of Robert Burns and his addressing of the haggis. It's a great evening of meat pies, tatties, neeps, whisky, ale, haggis, soda bread and so much more! It's a fine night that starts with poems and degrades into dirty limericks by the end.
